Pearl City Hawaii History & Facts

Pearl City is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the ʻEwa District and City & County of Honolulu on the Island of Oʻahu. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 47,698. Pearl City is along the north shore of Pearl Harbor. Waimalu borders Pearl City to the east and Waipahu borders the west. The U.S. postal code for Pearl City is 96782.

Early-day Pearl City had an array of rice paddies and fields that were plowed with water buffalo that hauled a two-wheeled cart. In the early 1880s, Pearl City was the final stop for Benjamin Franklin Dillingham's Oahu Railway, a mud wagon driven by a four-horse team. Lots for a yet-to-exist "Pearl City" went on sale in 1889, after completion of the rail line. Near the outskirts of Pearl City, the Remond Grove, an area where people were entertained by piano, banjo, trumpet, and saxophone performances, was a popular entertainment spot in the early 1900s.

Pearl City is located at 21°24'30" North, 157°58'1" East (21.408333, −157.966902).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has an area of 5.8 square miles (15 km2), of which 5.0 square miles (13 km2) is land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2) is water. The total area is 14.29% water.

As of the census of 2010, there were 47,698 people, 14,622 households, and 7,288 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,215.5 inhabitants per square mile (2,399.8/km2). There were 9,181 housing units at an average density of 1,842.2 per square mile (711.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 59.57% Asian-Pacific Islander, 17.24% White, 2.71% African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.41% from other races, and 18.81% from two or more races. 7.30% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The Hawai'i Department of Education operates public schools in Pearl City, including the Pearl City Complex public schools that include elementary, intermediate, and high schools.

Elementary schools in the CDP include Manana, Momilani, Palisades, Pearl City, Pearl City Highlands, Waimalu, and Waiau. Two secondary schools, Highlands Intermediate School and Pearl City High School, are also in the CDP. Momilani, Waimalu, and Waiau elementary schools and Pearl City High were in the Waimalu CDP as of the 2000 U.S. census, but as of the 2010 U.S. census are in the Pearl City CDP.

Duke Aiona

James R. "Duke" Aiona Jr. (born June 8, 1955) is an American politician and jurist who served as the tenth lieutenant governor of Hawaii under Linda Lingle from 2002 to 2010. A Republican, he also served both as an attorney and a judge for the state prior to becoming lieutenant governor.

Aiona was the Republican nominee for Governor of Hawaii in the 2010 election, but was defeated by Democrat Neil Abercrombie in the general election. He was the Republican nominee once again in the 2014 election, but lost to Democrat David Ige, since which he has done legal work and consulting. In June 2022, Aiona announced that he would run again for a third time in the Republican nomination for the 2022 election, which he lost to Democrat Josh Green, the incumbent Hawaii Lieutenant Governor. Aiona said he ran again due to "lack of a moral compass" and because basic issues have worsened without civility and transparency. As of 2023, he is the most recent Republican to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii.

James Aiona was born in Pearl City, Hawaiʻi. He is of Hawaiian and Portuguese descent on his father's side and Chinese on his mother's side. His mother worked as an elementary school teacher and his father worked as a life insurance agent. He attended Saint Louis School, a local academy of the Diocese of Honolulu. Upon graduating high school, Aiona played basketball at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California and pursued a bachelor of arts degree in political science, which he received from there in 1977. Aiona returned to Hawaiʻi and graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 1981.
